Please, Baby, Please

by Wise Owl

/
1.
When I woke up the next morning You looked right through me Through your eyes crying I could finally see They said: "please, baby, please..." When I called you from Atlanta You refused to speak Now three days sober Begging for a drink I said: "please, baby, please..." Those two pairs of big blue eyes Stare me down, watching me fall But what makes a man realize That he's about to lose it all? Sunrise at the county lock-up Now our baby is twenty-three She was out late drinking Killed a mother of three She said "please, daddy, please..."

about

in 2009, my friend Ian turned me on to the album Curse Your Branches by David Bazan. ever since then, the songs have stuck in my mind, in my heart, and have been something that keeps Ian and i connected across the country.

this song has stuck with me in particular because of how honest it is. honesty, realness, and unguardedness are some of the things i value most in a song, and it affects me greatly to hear how candidly David Bazan talks about what it's like in those moments when we know that we're letting people down.

i feel like we spend so much effort to make ourselves seem like we're good people, and that we would never fail the people that rely on us. to me, this song is brave and it does me a great kindness to let me know that i'm not the only one who has ever felt that shame in those moments.

in a brilliant full-circle occasion, my friend Ian joins me from NY to sing the song that he gave me in 2009. Ian is also a Bandcamp artist, and he has written more than a few songs that get to me just like this one does. you can find his music at: sidesaddle.bandcamp.com

and as always my partner in dub Nate "Black Market" is all over this one too. be sure to inspect his treasure trove of dub reggae music at: blackmarketdub.bandcamp.com
