even if you were a million miles away i can still feel you in my bed near me, touch me, feel me and even at the bottom of the sea i could still hear inside my head telling me, touch me, feel me and all the time, you were telling me lies so tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you i'm gonna hold on to the times that we had tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you have you ever tried sleeping with a broken heart? well you could try sleeping in my bed lonely, own me, nobody ever shut it down like you you wore the crown, you made my body feel heaven-bound why don't you hold me, need me i thought you told me you'd never leave me looking in the sky i could see your face then i knew right where i fit in take me, make me you know that i'll always be in love with you right, 'til the end so tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you i'm gonna hold on to the times that we had tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you anybody could've told you right from the start it's 'bout to fall apart so rather than hold on to a broken dream i'll just hold on to love and i could find a way to make it, don't hold on too tight i'll make it without you tonight so tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you i'm gonna hold on to the times that we had tonight, i'm gonna find a way to make it without you

about

there was a period of time when i was working around a lot of hip hop & r&b musicians, and they blew me away with their musical skill and ideas. i never took their music seriously while i was growing up listening to rock 'n' roll and reggae. but after they opened up my mind, i felt like i could finally hear artists and songs that had always been there, but i never paid any serious attention to before.

one of those artists is Alicia Keys, and my favorite song she wrote is Try Sleeping with a Broken Heart. this song really fascinated me for years because it sounds to me like it's constantly *ascending* -- like the pitch of the music is always rising, like every time the chord changes it goes up, and somehow it never comes down again. of course, i knew that's impossible -- there's only so high you can go and clearly the same chorus happens again, so it can't always be rising in one direction. so it's like Alicia created this musical *illusion*. i used to drag my friends who are way better with music theory than me over to a piano and ask them to explain to me how she does that. didn't work, nobody ever fully explained it.

so i've finally taken the whole song apart piece by piece, and recorded it all over again myself one part at a time -- and i still don't really understand how it sounds like that! but she did it. she crafted this beautiful arrangement of musical notes that seems to rise and ascend, ever higher to the sky, and never come down again. i hope you enjoy my homage to her incredible work
